Digital marketing is simply the creation and promotion of online content. This online content is shared through various channels, such as via social media apps like LinkedIn, Tiktok, Twitter, and Facebook. There are various specializations to choose from as a Digital Marketer, such as email marketing, video marketing, content marketing, affiliate marketing, and advertising. Of course, these specializations also intertwine so they are certainly not stand-alone methods.
Email Marketing: Simply put, this is marketing to a particular target audience via email writing and design.
Video marketing: Think YouTube and Tiktok! Video is said to be one of the most significant digital marketing channels. We are seeing more and more marketing done on most social media applications, such as Tiktok and Snapchat. Those who market via Tiktok understand all too well that our attention spans are getting worse and worse, and that a short, attention-grabbing, video geared towards their target audience is usually the way to go!
Content marketing: Work falling underneath the scope of content marketing includes email writing, creating infographics, brochures, adds or banners, eBooks and articles, etc.
Affiliate marketing: When the writer/publisher (affiliate) markets someone else’s product to others through various channels (social media apps, video, email). E.g. If I were to advertise various Amazon products on my website by writing detailed product reviews, I could make some profit as an affiliate when those advertised Amazon products sell via using the link on my website to make the purchase. To be able to promote and sell the products, I should research and know both the target audience/audiences and products extremely well. If engaging in affiliate marketing, it would be wise to buy and test out the company’s products that you wish to write about and promote. People who are well known and experienced with affiliate marketing can develop long time partnerships with a company.

Well, I decided to write a short post about digital marketing because I am looking to begin a new career path, and this is something that interests me since I love creating, writing, and working independently. I have been wondering what kind of career I can pursue where I get to use my writing, research and organizational skills on a daily basis and do not have to be stuck in an extremely loud, chaotic, and overwhelming environment (as I was with teaching in junior high). While working as a teacher, I always enjoyed the idea generation, content development, and planning aspects of my job more than working with large groups of students every day, and being responsible for so much that felt outside my control as one person without adequate supports and time.
So, I’ll keep learning more about this field to see if I found my second career path. 🙂
